In an open letter, Infantino defended the tournament as a success, celebrating 'happiness, unity, safety, and togetherness'. However, this response comes amidst a series of controversies surrounding the event, including visa restrictions for teams and concerns over teams from conflict-hit regions. Infantino's letter also followed scrutiny of FIFA's handling of disciplinary cases and refereeing decisions. While he acknowledged potential mistakes in refereeing, he argued that many of the decisions were commonplace in various competitions worldwide. He pointed to the participation of countries facing political tensions, domestic crises, and health challenges as evidence of football's ability to transcend divisions. However, Infantino's comments were met with skepticism, as Iran head coach Amir Ghalenoei described Team Melli as the 'most oppressed' team at the World Cup. Earlier this month, a human rights group FairSquare lodged a complaint against Infantino to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), alleging that he 'repeatedly breached the IOC's rules on political neutrality'. The IOC rejected the complaint, stating that the matter fell outside the jurisdiction of its Ethics Commission. In my opinion, Infantino's response is a classic example of 'deflection'. Instead of addressing the real issues, he is trying to shift the focus to the success of the tournament and the ability of football to unite the world. While football can indeed bring people together, it is also a sport that can be used to cover up deeper political and social issues. What makes this particularly fascinating is the contrast between Infantino's words and the experiences of teams like Iran, who faced significant challenges and restrictions during the tournament. This raises a deeper question: how can we ensure that football truly serves as a force for good, rather than a tool for distraction and deflection?
